U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (Jan. 25, 2019) – Army Gen. Joseph L. Votel, Commander, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), visited the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3).

The general embarked to speak face to face with senior leadership from Kearsarge, Amphibious Squadron 6 and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.

“After seeing today what Kearsarge brings to the fight, I’m truly impressed and have a sense of confidence knowing this highly-trained Navy and Marine Corps team is here to respond to any crisis that may occur within the region,” Votel said.

While aboard, Votel toured the ship and presented awards to Sailors and Marines.

“I’m honored to have this opportunity to visit the ship and personally thank everyone for all you do for our nation and for supporting CENTCOM during your deployment,” Votel said over the ship’s announcing system to the crew.

Accompanying Votel was Lt. Gen. Ghanem bin Shaheen Al-Ghanem, Qatar Armed Forces chief of staff.

Kearsarge is the flagship for the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
